Practical Tips
Getting to Düsseldorf: Convenient travel by car, train, or plane to the Hamm apartment.
A relaxed journey is the best start to your stay. Düsseldorf is one of the most conveniently located cities in Germany: several highways intersect around the state capital, the main train station is an ICE high-speed rail hub, and Düsseldorf Airport is the third largest in Germany.
By plane: Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)
Düsseldorf Airport is the third-largest airport in Germany, handling over 22 million passengers per year. More than 70 airlines connect DUS with over 200 destinations worldwide.
Getting from the airport into the city is very easy:
S-Bahn (S11): From the airport station, it takes only 12 minutes to Düsseldorf Central Station.
Taxi: The ride to Hamm takes around 20–25 minutes depending on traffic and costs about €30–40.
Rental car: All major providers are available directly at the airport. Via the A44 and A46, Hamm can be reached in about 20 minutes.
Ride-sharing: Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow are reliably available in Düsseldorf.
Tip: If you are arriving from overseas with luggage, it is recommended to pre-book a taxi or transfer service to save time and reduce stress after a long journey.
By train: Düsseldorf Central Station
Düsseldorf is centrally located in Germany’s ICE and Eurostar network. Direct connections include Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris. Numerous regional trains and S-Bahn lines also stop at the main station.
From Central Station to the Hamm apartment:
By tram: Lines 706 or 708 take you to Hamm in about 15 minutes
By taxi: Around 10–15 minutes, approximately €15
On foot + public transport: With light luggage, a walk along the Rhine promenade can be combined with a short ride — a beautiful first impression of the city
Tip: With the Deutschland-Ticket (currently €58/month as of 2026), you can use all local public transport across Germany — ideal for exploring the region.
By car: highways and parking
Düsseldorf is very well connected by several major highways:
A3 from Frankfurt / Cologne / Oberhausen
A46 from Wuppertal / Mönchengladbach
A52 from Essen / Mönchengladbach (ideal for the trade fair and airport)
A57 from Cologne / Krefeld
A44 from Aachen / Kassel
The apartment in Hamm is conveniently located but away from main traffic routes. The easiest access is via the A46 (exit Düsseldorf-Bilk) or A57 (exit Düsseldorf-Hafen).

FlixBus and other coach services also regularly serve Düsseldorf. The central bus terminal is located directly at the main train station, making onward travel to the apartment by tram or taxi simple and convenient.
Public transport in Düsseldorf
During your stay, you don’t necessarily need a car. Düsseldorf’s public transport system is dense, reliable, and affordable. The Rheinbahn operates an extensive network of trams, U-Bahn (subway), and buses.
Recommended ticket options:
Single ticket for one journey
4-trip ticket for discounted single rides
Day ticket for unlimited travel within one day
Deutschland-Ticket for longer stays
Apps such as “Rheinbahn” or “DB Navigator” provide real-time schedules and connections.
By bike and on foot
Düsseldorf is one of Germany’s most bicycle-friendly major cities. A dense network of bike paths, the Rhine cycle route running directly past the apartment, and bike-sharing services like nextbike make cycling an excellent option.
From the Hamm apartment:
Altstadt: ~15 minutes by bike
Medienhafen: ~10 minutes by bike
Airport: ~35 minutes by e-bike (a scenic ride on a good-weather day)
If you prefer walking, the Rhine promenade offers one of the most beautiful urban walking routes in Germany — leading from Hamm directly to the Rhine Tower and further to the Medienhafen.
Arriving in Hamm – the final stretch
Hamm is a small, quiet district in the south of Düsseldorf, located directly on the Rhine. Despite its central location, it remains calm and uncrowded — a pleasant contrast to the lively Old Town.
Tram line 704 stops directly in the area and connects you to Königsallee or the main station in about 10–15 minutes. For walkers, the Rhine promenade offers a scenic route into the city center.
